How much does it cost to travel around South America?

I'm considering traveling around S. America for around 6 months to a year and wondered how much it would roughly cost. I would be back packing and am not expecting to sleep anywhere fancy or travel in luxery but I would like to hit some major cities for nights out as well as traveling to more remote places. Also if anyone knows the anyway to pick up casual work there to earn whilst I'm traveling that would be much appreciated. I don't speak much Spanish at the moment but fully intend on learning.

Ok. Transportation? Bus is the cheapest way.. Hostels abound.. but watch out for thieves and pickpockets. In most countries it is against the law to work without a work visa. Also, be careful. Being in a remote place in South America, alone and not speaking Spanish is a recipie for disaster or worse. Do some research before you go.

The quickest way is probably via London. From Edinburgh, you could get the train to London and then the train to Castle Cary. It takes about 7 hours according to thetrainline.com. From Glasgow it's about 8 hours.

Or you could go via Birmingham New Street if you don't fancy heading into London. At New Street, get the train to Bristol Parkway, and then the train to Castle Cary

It kind of depends on what you are looking for. I assume you are traveling from Port Canaveral for the cruise. Rates will be lower during value season, which is during hurricane season. I've never had a problem during hurricane season, so it is not something you absolutely have to avoid.

If you are planning to go to some theme parks while in Orlando, than you will want to go when school is in session. The crowds will be lowest. So the best time is in Fall, Winter or Spring. The weather is also nicer during this time, these are the most enjoyable times to go.

The best time to go is during the winter months. It is much cheaper for you and who ever else is going.

As a general rule I like to go the last week of April through the middle of May for several reasons. It's not Hurricane Season. It isn't too hot but still warm enough for everthing in the water. Spring break is over for everyone and Summer vacation hasn't started yet, so you aren't going to deal with either of those crowds. Fishing is good that time of year, my personal favorite hobby. That's my opinion (leaving on cruise in 36 days).

It depends on the agent. Some will fax, call or email the hotel they have contracts with to check availability. Other companies - the larger ones - will have a pre-bought or pre-assigned quota of rooms from the hotels they have contracts with and will usually have an internal computer system similar to Sabre to check the availability of their quota. When I was an agent, we used to make the bookings by fax and email as we specialised in independent travel rather than package holidays. Phone calls don't really cut it as you need to receive confirmation in writing. Now, some hotels have online booking systems that allow registered agents to access a special agents' area and book that way - technology is a wonderful thing.

Hotels are available through the major airline reservation systems. In the US, they are Sabre, Apollo, and Worldspan. Amadeus is also used but is much less common. In the pre-Internet days, that's how we did most hotel reservations.

Some reservations are made by phone and fax because the airline systems don't always have last-room availability. Some agents also use the Internet.

You have a long ride on a bus or van or a much shorter ride in a plane. Up to you!

Too many tourists want to jump off the plane bringing them to BKK and hop on the next plane flying to Phuket - without even knowing what airport they are flying out of or even if they have enough time between flights!

Stay in Bangkok for a few days, you can book a flight when you are in Bangkok if you want. Some flights leave from Don Muang (DMK) and some leave from Suvarnabhumi (BKK.) Even in Bangkok you can get a tan just walking around. See Bangkok for a while, take in a couple tours, do some shopping and get used to the time changes and heat. Plan on the last night in Bangkok too so you don't have to worry about a last minute connecting flight being late and you miss your ride home.

Trains in Thailand are also an easy & inexpensive way to travel. Overnight trains (get 2nd class w/AC) are perfect for trips to Chiang Mai from Bangkok. For just Bkk to Phuket I would recommend just flying for the quickness and convenience.

If you want to see a bit of the country between, I would get a scheduled or tourist bus. Theis is extremely cheap and you get the advantage of seeing the sights.

If you fly, once in Phuket you have the islands close by but would also say hire a car or hire a private taxi and head down to Krabi.

There is also a great national park near Krabi called 'Than Bokkerani' that is an amazing natural site.

Fly Driving or the bus will tale 10-12 hours and the plane is pretty cheap (about 4150 baht or about $118 Round trip).

I am planning to go on a 10 day trip in Spain starting with the 17th of September 2007. I will be arriving in Barcelona, but still I want to visit some of the others Spain cities as well. For now I think at: Sevillia, Madrid, Granada, Valencia. Can anyone indicate me a cheap and fast way to travel through Spain. Is it by train ? Is it by bus ? Is it by low cost air operators ? It would be great if you could also tell me which company I should choose.

I will tell you right off the bat that you would really be rushing it to try to do justice to all those places in ten days. With Barcelona as your starting point -- you are 1130 Kilometers or 700 miles from Seville. It's a five hour train ride from Barcelona to Madrid.

The best way to really see Spain is by car in my opinion and car rental is about the same price as train fare between major cities -- although you really don't need a car in any of the major cities you mentioned -- but you can miss a lot of stuff that is in between major destinations.

I think you need at least three days in both Barcelona and Madrid. You can also take the AVE a very fast train that can get you to Cordoba from Madrid in 2 hours and Seville in 2 1/2 hours. The AVE doens't run to Barcelona but does leave from Llieda which is about an hour away from Barcelona.

Maybe you should Consider just doing Barcelona and Madrid and making side trips to Toledo near Madrid and Girona near Barcelona using train or renting car in Barcelona after your visit and driving to Madrid taking a couple of days staying at a place llike Cuenca, Zaragosa or Segobriga for the night and explore the countryside a bit also, the landscape is beautiful and extremely varied and there are castles, Roman Ruins, and smaller villages to explore. Then drop of the car in Madrid..

Just some stuff to think about.

Within Spain, I would travel by train. If you are American, you can purchase a train pass that will let you hop on and off the train for a certain number of days, for a good price.

If not, if you have internet access, you can pretty much play it by ear. Otherwise, try to plan your trip ahead of time. Almost all cities have a tourism office that can help you arrange transportation. Bring a list of their addresses with you. They are very helpful.

Train is possibly the best way, as all those cities are very well connected. If you are from outside Europe, you could get a rails pass, which is quite affordable. Website www.renfe.es. Also less hassle as by car, as suggested, specially for parking, paying toll and more. I do not suggest bus. They drive through almost every town on their way from A to B. And flights within Spain are usually not that cheap.

How do online travel companies manage hotel bookings/availability?

Most people are familiar with online travel sites that allow you to book hotels directly (often at cheaper rates than through a travel agent, or even if you contact the hotels directly).

So how do the online travel websites manage their accomodation stock? For example, are they somehow connected in to each hotels room management system and thereby able to see whether rooms are available?

Do the hotels offer up a block of rooms to each of the online travel sites for them to exclusively sell?

The hotel I work for deals with several different online companies, and we do indeed offer them each only a few rooms. We are also able to do what is known as 'closing out' which means that if we are starting to get full we can go onto each website and tell it not to sell anymore rooms for us. This can also be done with a specific type of room so say we are starting to get full on double bedded rooms we can 'close out' on those but continue to sell the websites allocation of twin bedded and single bedded rooms.

i was in a similar situation, i found the best way was to catch a greyhound bus, it takes all night and stops a lot of times but you get there, and leaves and arrives in the center of both cities, so no airport transfers $85 one way, $170 return, i stayed at the YMCA in NYC it was pretty cheap and right in the city and safe and secure

On earth the radio waves from your favorite radio or TV station will only go 100 miles or so at the very most, but NASA and Astronomers say that they will travel almost for ever, or at least Billions and Trillions of miles with out stopping.

How is that possible?

Voyager 1 is so far from Earth in 1998 that it takes 9 hours 36 minutes for a radio signal traveling at the speed of light to reach Earth. Voyager's signal, produced by a 20 watt radio transmitter, is so faint that the amount of power reaching NASA's antennas is 20 billion times smaller than the power of a digital watch battery. Think that they will eventual fade into the noise of background radiation. We don't know if our signals can leave the Sun's magnetic heiloshpere

On earth, propagation is limited by the earth's curvature. A television transmitter throws hundreds of kilowatts to go thirty miles or so, but an aircraft can talk to an ATC radio a hundred miles away with only eight watts of power because there is nothing in the way. At large distances, 1/r^2 becomes important, but with suitable antennas we can talk to spacecraft a billion miles away: there is nothing but empty space in the way.

Radio waves on earth are either line of sight (FM or TV) or broadcast. The former can only be picked up when the earth has not curved out of their path. The latter in spreading soon become weak enough that the other signals being generated overwhelm them.

All of these signals, in theory, can go on forever in space, but in practice become so weak that they can not be detected. An indication of how far they can go is the very low wattage of the transmitters on the Mars orbiters and landers, which are sent and received with dish antennas with digital correction for lost bits. Harder to find is the wattage of the distant transmissions from the satellites that went beyond Neptune, which had to be received with very large dish antennas.

Remember that radio waves and light waves are the same phenomena: electromagnetic radiation. The light you see from stars traveled thousands and probably millions of light years. You can see them, because:

1. stars give off intense light

2. there is nothing blocking your view of light

A similar story holds for radio waves.

Assuming you'll rent a small car like a Corsa/Fiesta/Peugeot 207, and the current price for petrol, you should spend about 10 euro every 100km... so I would budget about $100/$120 for petrol. Take into consideration unplanned detours... even if you have maps and sat nav, I guarantee you ARE going to get lost at least once in the countryside and drive around in tears for an hour until you find a road sign... :-)

I think 700 km isn't very far, roads here are twisty and you will find that you go off the beaten track from time to time. $75 won't get you very far .... Share the cost with someone, you'll pay 3 times that easily, if not more.

Your question got me interested. I've lived in this area for years and never heard of the University of Northern Virginia, so did some checking. Based on their website, it appears that while the school is licensed by Virginia, it is not accredited--at least by the mainstream accrediting organizations in the US. Were you aware of this? That doesn't necessarily mean that the school isn't good, but it does mean that many employers won't accept a degree from the school, nor can you easily transfer credits to another school. They also don't appear to advertise in the local media, and they have offices/campus overseas--it appears that they are targeting international students who want to get a visa to study in America, regardless of the school.

As for transportation, it will be limited. While the Virginia Railway Express runs out to Manassas and there are also some commuter buses from DC to Manassas, service is weekdays only.
